The Medical Intensive Care Unit is part of the 450-bed university teaching hospital Ambroise Paré Hospital at Boulogne-Billancourt near Paris, France. The unit has nine beds in intensive care and eight in post-intensive care. In 2002, 1348 patients were admitted, 615 in intensive care and 733 in post-intensive care. The unit's staff comprises two university teaching hospital physicians, one hospital physician, two senior registrars, and a contractual hospital physician who has just completed a diploma in medical intensive care.
The unit is fully involved in teaching and training through participation in postgraduate diploma courses in the physiology and molecular biology of the circulation and respiration (University of Paris XII), echocardiography and hemodynamics (University of Paris XI), medical intensive care, and noninvasive hemodynamics (Lyon). It is actively participating in the reorganization of postgraduate diplomas in echocardiography throughout France, the aim being to adapt them as best as possible to non-cardiologists. In this regard, the unit offers courses to residents in intensive care who are studying for such diplomas.
The unit's clinical research activities are centered on the serious diseases of intensive care, particularly acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), septic shock, and pulmonary embolism, in which echocardiography is used as an interdisciplinary research tool. The unit also uses echocardiography, available round the clock, as the principal means of hemodynamic diagnosis and monitoring.
Lastly, the unit has close contacts with medical research unit INSERM U 492 (Créteil) which is specialized in pulmonary arterial hypertension and pulmonary vascular remodeling.
